Regarded as first fashion photographer; after photo of Lee Miller derailed her fashion career he provided her an introduction to Man Ray; early pictorialist works, partnered with Alfred Stieglitz to form Gallery 291; contributed to military photo efforts in WWI and WWII, Academy Award for war documentary film; Director of Photography at MoMA.
