Blistering

blistered raku piece

A glaze defect in which materials in the clay or glaze are still volatilizing and producing bubbles in the glaze at the end of the firing, where they are frozen in place as the kiln cools. The bubbles often break, leaving sharp-edged craters. Shino glazes applied over other glazes will often blister - for a discussion of this see this clayart thread.
