Test Tile

test tiles

A piece of clay used to test how a glaze or clay will look after it's fired.

Test tiles can take many forms. Tile-shaped samples are easy to display and stack, but may not show how a glaze will act on the inside of a bowl, for example. Test pieces formed more like the ware the glaze will be used on give more information, but may be impractical to do for every glaze test. Test results can also vary depending upon how the glaze was applied, where the test pieces were placed in the kiln, how the kiln was fired, etc.; be sure to keep careful records so you can duplicate successes and avoid repeating unwanted results.
