French
1858 , d. 1936

From wealthy family, spent time with artists in cafes, sketched and enjoyed bohemian culture, discovered photography and practiced and wrote about it for thirty-odd years. Used gum bichromate printing process , and later oil printing process that allowed him to manipulate images in painterly ways. Director of the Photo-Club de Paris and a proponent of Pictorialism (much like Alfred Stieglitz and the American Photo-Secession), in part as a way to distinguish more artistic work from that of amateur or commercial photographers. Gave up photography for no known reason in 1914, retired to a farm with a couple servants and dogs and drove classic cars to the beach to sketch heavy-set women bathers? (From Wikipedia, that, but couldn't resist until I track down a source).
