1910 , d. 1937

Born Gerta Pohorylle. Moved to Paris in 1933, where she met Endre Friedmann. They became partners and fell in love, and while he taught her photography, she promoted his/their work as that of a fictional American photographer, Robert Capa, the name Friedmann ended up making his own. They went on to cover the Spanish Civil War, working together and also independently. Gerda died in the Battle of Brunete in July 1937, run over by a tank in the confusion of a retreat.
