Sebastião Salgado, GOLD, SERRA PELADA, BRAZIL: The mines are controlled by state civil guardsmen, known to make lower wages than the carriers; often rivalries occur. Uniformed guards are proud of their status but don't want to be considered lower than mine workers because of their wages. Sometimes fighting and killings result: a guard who had shot a worker was stoned to death by carriers during such a battle. Serra Pelada, State of Pará, Brazil, 1986.

They first put all their belongings in a circle on the ground, around which they place wooden supports covered with reindeer skins.
Sebastião Salgado, THE NENETS: North of the Ob River, about 62 miles (100 kilometers) inside the Yamal Peninsula, fierce winds keep even daytime temperatures low. When the weather is particularly hostile, the Nenets and their reindeer may spend several days in the same place, doing repair work on sledges and reindeer skins to keep busy. The deeper they move into the Arctic Circle, the less vegetation is to be found. Inside the Arctic Circle, Yamal Peninsula, Siberia, Russia, March-April 2011.</

Sebastião Salgado, THE NENETS: The larger sledges are driven by the women, with as many as 10 sledges forming a long caravan. The men drive smaller sledges since they go faster: it is the men's job to regroup the herd around the camp each morning and, often with the help of dogs, to keep the reindeer moving in a single direction throughout the day.Yamal Peninsula, Siberia, Russia, March-April 2011.
