Both his parents were dead by the time he was seven, and he was raised by an uncaring aunt. Graduated from a craft school, became a photographer's assistant, eventually became a freelance photographer. Forged passports and documents for the French resistance during WWII. Had an affinity for children and photographed life how he wanted it to be, not how it was.
