David Octavius Hill (1802 - 1870), a Scottish painter, hired Robert Adamson (1821 - 1848), a Scottish engineer who took to photography due to poor health, to photograph portraits of 470 clergymen for reference for a painting. Their partnership was successful and they ended up opening a photography studio, taking portraits of the famous as well as fishwives and everyday people.
