Grew up in Southern California and photographed the geometric, minimalist landscapes of urban sprawl beginning in the 1970s, helping form the "New Topographics" movement. In the late 1980s he moved to Europe and taught in Switzerland and Italy; he also moved to using color and focused on sites of technology.
