William Eugene Smith shot for two local papers after high school, then moved to New York and worked for Newsweek. Fired from Newsweek for refusing to use a medium format camera; went on to work for Life, then became member of Magnum Photos. Known for perfectionism, photos of WWII and photo-essays on Albert Schweitzer, a country doctor, Pittsburgh, and Minimata disease, to name a few.
