Born Edward James Muggeridge. Photographed landscapes of the American West and did pioneering work with stop-motion photography, capturing how people and animals moved (but composing and arranging photos for show rather than rigorous science). Used multiple cameras in series to capture action and showed that all four feet of a horse do leave the ground at once when trotting; also created the zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting the first moving images. Shot and killed his wife's lover but got off on the grounds of justifiable homicide.
